Congratulations to this year’s winner Olivia Doig with “Tom” in Acrylic.

Oliva, currently in Year 12 studying Art, Maths & Physics at Springwood Sixth Form, King’s Lynn was one of several shortlisted artists that submitted work to the Youth Artist of Year competition organised by the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association, the charity the runs the Royal Norfolk Show.

The judges commented that this piece shows maturity, compassion and tenderness, both in the understanding and control of the paint and brushwork but also in the study of the model and the composition.

There was a great variety in type, format, medium and style in the work presented to us. It is refreshing to see that art is thriving in the youth and student arenas.

While I have always been quite good at art, I was fortunate to have been given the opportunity to experiment with different mediums and printing techniques by my GCSE art teacher, Mr Bennell, while studying at St Clements High School.

My preferred technique is painting, specifically using acrylic or oil and I used acrylic working from a photo because I find It easier to manipulate and create movement compared to other mediums. The subject is my brother when we were about to have an evening swim on the North Norfolk Coast last summer.
